nutty mcnutface

hi! it’s been a minute! have you been compulsively refreshing your inboxes as you impatiently awaited my next communication? more likely you didn’t even notice I was gone. either way I’m back now.
I was bowled down by some ~health issues~ both mental and physical, and took a minute to get my creative zest back, but I’m fine now (I think).

anyway, here’s a light-hearted poem about a little nutty creature with poor self-preservation instincts.

nutty mcnutface

(you guys have got to help me think of better titles for these)

there is a creature in the woods
who's made from many nuts:
hazels form his hands and feet
and gingkoes make his guts.

he has a macadamia mouth,
a pecan for a nose,
pistachios for fingers,
and little peanut toes.

he has almonds for elbows
and acorns as his knees.
he totters over topsoil
in a tattered chemise.

with walnuts for his brains
and nutmegs for his eyes,
he isn't very vigilant,
nor is he very wise.

he likes to pester squirrels;
when he sees one in its drey,
he gives it a tap on the tail
and then he runs away.

it's quite a stupid hobby;
if they catch him he'll be eaten,
or buried deep down in the ground
to be dug up next season.

he seems to take no notice
when folks express their fears—
but it's probably hard to listen
when you've cashews for ears.

he's rather a tough nut to crack,
though many men have tried;
his torso is a chestnut,
with a hickory heart inside.

in other news,

a couple of mynah birds joined me for lunch

my dad left his jumper unattended on the drying rack and so I (temporarily) stole it

made a tiny flower arrangement in an old vase that I mudlarked last winter off the shores of falmouth

sso played some tchaikovsky and it was highly enjoyable. cheap seats to classical concerts are a great and affordable way to have fun alone!

spilled tea on my bed right after I changed my sheets

cholera noodles

sun was a red orb

I have pmdd which is like pms but x100. cried 33 times in three days! a statistic in which I take great pride. I’m totally fine now btw, I just have a regularly scheduled hormonal depression a few days each month and this round was particularly harrowing

delightful little google translated pot, peak japanese design

spilled tea on fresh sheets again!! (two weeks later). I am not a very coordinated individual

books

recently I read (3 weeks worth of books):

good omens - terry pratchett & neil gaiman
★★★★★
this was a delight. dream team author combo. they had me laughing out loud in my chair

book of night - holly black
★★★★☆
if you want a fun fantasy thriller holly black always delivers! this one wasn’t her greatest ever work but I still devoured it. it’s set in the modern world except someone discovered how to enchant shadows to be all peter-pan-like and they fight each other and stuff.

clay - david almond
★★★★☆
I read this years ago in the school library in snatches of free lunch periods. it was definitely better in my memory but still great. also pretty creepy for a children’s book, felt very uncomfortable the whole time.

flour babies - anne fine
★★★☆☆
continuing my childrens book kick. this one’s about a slightly delinquent schoolboy who has to take care of a sack of flour for his home economics project and grows really attached to it. a cute way to spend an afternoon.

what my bones know - stephanie foo
★★★★☆
a memoir/journalistic investigation about cptsd and intergenerational trauma from an asian american author. the audiobook is great; she used to host the this american life podcast and knows how to narrate.

big swiss - jen beagin
★★★★☆
if you enjoy reading sapphic literary fiction about deranged women doing deranged things this one is for you! a women who transcribes sessions for a sex therapist pursues one of his clients (married, 20 years younger). chaos ensues.

bride - ali hazelwood
★★★☆☆
look sometimes you just gotta read a romantasy about a vampire and werewolf couple okay

music

some songs I have on repeat:

  • can ye dance - donovan
I feel like my true gremlin self boogieing to this weird little ditty. the nut man would totally get down to this

  • starburned and unkissed - caroline polachek
every time caroline releases a new song you’ll probably find it in my next email. the first lyric is ‘wake up’, so naturally it is now my alarm song

  • anymore - porches
I’ve been choosing porches as my music to fall asleep to lately. I don’t know what this says about me. maybe that I know how to have a good time even while supine

as always you can reply directly to this email! please do so if you have any inclination.
